If you have swelling or heaviness in your legs, it’s important to see a doctor because those symptoms could lead to a more severe condition. The veins in your legs have one-way valves that are supposed to keep blood flowing to your heart. When the valves don’t work properly, blood could begin collecting in the veins, leading to chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). If left untreated, venous insufficiency could lead to an ulcer. If you are experiencing venous insufficiency, do not hesitate to call or go online to schedule an appointment with Bradley Radwaner, MD at Elite Veins NY.

Varicose Veins - Venous Insufficiency Q & A

What causes venous insufficiency?

Women are more likely than men to have venous insufficiency. Several factors can cause venous insufficiency, including:

  • Deep vein thrombosis, or a blood clot deep in your leg that causes pain in the calf, foot, or leg, or swelling in the extremities
  • A lack of exercise
  • Sitting or standing for long stretches of time.

Your chances of having venous insufficiency might be higher if you are:

  • Obese
  • Age 50 or older
  • Pregnant or have been pregnant more than once
  • From a family with a history of venous insufficiency
  • A smoker

What are the symptoms of venous insufficiency?

You may notice one or more of these symptoms in your legs during early stages of venous insufficiency:

  • Swelling or heaviness
  • Pain
  • Itchiness
  • Varicose veins
  • Skin that looks like leather.

Without treatment, the pressure and swelling associated with venous insufficiency will cause the tiny blood vessels in your legs to burst, potentially turning your skin reddish-brown. This bursting can lead to more swelling and ulcers, and the latter is very difficult to heal.

If you have any of the aforementioned symptoms, talk to your doctor. The sooner you treat venous insufficiency, the less likely you are to end up with ulcers.

If you are interested in treating your venous insufficiency, do not hesitate to schedule an appointment with Dr. Radwaner of Elite Veins NY. Please call or schedule an appointment online.
